MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a darkly comedic drama that follows the journey of Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan, who clashes with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her best friend who died in the military. Despite the persistence of her squad advisor VA (Morgan Freeman), the fierce love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the intricacies of an unexpected romance, the cozy, dysfunctional friendship between Merritt and Zoe keeps the two isolated from the world. . That is, until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s lake house, begins to lose his way and needs the one thing he doesn’t want to give up… help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a divided family, and the complex ways we process grief.
